Information Gain from Inference
نویسنده
چکیده
An argument is made for a double implicational associative information frame, 〈S, , , →, ←〉 being a relevant structure insofar as the specification of the information gain from inference (IGfI) is concerned. A strong informational pluralism is adopted throughout. The rejection of the structural rules K, K′, W, WI, C and CI is justified on the basis of the identification, frequency, and order of formulae as being a necessary condition on the tracking of the information gain resulting from inferential procedures. The retention of the structural rule B is justified on the basis of inference being a sequential process. The information structure in question, I, is identified with its corresponding algebraic structure, a partially ordered residuated semigroup, (S, ≤, , →, ←). A possible philosophical basis for extending I from a semigroup structure to a monoidal structure in the context of IGfI is then explored.

Double Fuzzy Implications-Based Restriction Inference Algorithm
The main condition of the differently implicational inferencealgorithm is reconsidered from a contrary direction, which motivatesa new fuzzy inference strategy, called the double fuzzyimplications-based restriction inference algorithm. New restrictioninference principle is proposed, which improves the principle of thefull implication restriction inference algorithm. Furthermore, focusing on the ...
متن کاملComputational Information Gain and Inference
A definition of computational information gain is presented based on Levin descriptional complexity. The measure is applicable to different inference processes, either deductive or inductive, and evaluates the relative value of new inference results.

Linguistic information can be conveyed in the form of speech and written text, but it is the content of the message that is ultimately essential for higher-level processes in language comprehension, such as making inferences and associations between text information and knowledge about the world. Linguistically, inference is the shovel that allows receivers to dig meaning out from the text with...
متن کاملCollective Inference and the Demand for Financial Information∗
The tension between two margins of information acquisition is studied in a canonical two-period model of portfolio choice. At the intensive margin, an investor chooses the amount of information. At the extensive margin, investors subscribe to the information source. Only if the number of informed investors at the extensive margin is sufficiently small does acquisition of additional information ...
متن کاملSimulation-based optimal Bayesian experimental design for nonlinear systems
The optimal selection of experimental conditions is essential to maximizing the value of data for inference and prediction, particularly in situations where experiments are time-consuming and expensive to conduct. We propose a general mathematical framework and an algorithmic approach for optimal experimental design with nonlinear simulation-based models; in particular, we focus on finding sets...
